The Productivity, Technology, Gender, Innovation and Climate (PROTEGIC) Survey is a project sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF). It collected data on business performance, innovation (including green innovation), technology use, management practices, gender participation, financing and perceptions of the country’s business climate to advance the understanding of the factors affecting productivity at the business level.
The survey covered formal firms with five or more employees in 13 Caribbean countries: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname.
Parstats was in charge of the survey design and implementation. The sample for each country was stratified by economic sector, firm size and geographic location and selected from national sampling frames provided by the National Statistical Offices or built through web scraping methods and manual supervision.
The data was collected using three alternative modes. Firms were first visited and interviewed in person using a CAPI application. If the respondents preferred, they could be interviewed by phone using a CATI application. In some cases, respondents were too busy with their job tasks to be interviewed in person or by phone. These could go online at a convenient time and complete a CAWI questionnaire.
The survey results will be publicly available through an online dashboard created by Parstats. This dashboard will be accessible on the IDB and Compete Caribbean websites, allowing users to request a large number of indicators by country, economic sector, size, and other firm characteristics.
